~ * About Me * ~

Howdy! You can call my Cheesy (aka Chizukekihime.)
It/She/Her/They/Them

I'm a lifestyle lolita and owner of Kira Kira Kawaii Shoppe, a sustainable lolita fashion store where everything is made from vintage and upcycled materials! I've been wearing lolita fashion since 2011.

My main style is sweet lolita (extensively so, from early sweet to current trends) but my wardrobe is big enough that I can also do looks in old school, punk, gothic, classic, pirate... Everything. I have a dress basically for everything ok. orz

My favorite brand is mainly Metamorphose Temps de Fille and Bodyline (!!!). I also prefer older AP though up until about 2014, I'm not as fond of their current designs.

In addition to lolita fashion I also collect dolls as a main hobby, specifically: BJDs, Monster High, Barbie, and vintage My Little Pony!

I also have an extensive background in the arts as a violist, filmmaker, traditional/digital artist, sculptor, seamstress, makeup artist, and probably some other things I'm forgetting. I'm extremely left brained and more likely than not autistic. Math is no good!

Lolita 50 (45) Questions

1. Please tell us your Hand Name (name that’s used ONLY in internet.) and hometown.
My name is Cheesy/Chizukekihime, and I am from the American northwest!

2. About how long is your history as a Lolita?
10 years, I started wearing the fashion in 2011, back in the EGL LJ days!

3. What first motivated you to do Lolita fashion?
I honestly don't remember? I believe I found out about it through fairy kei and Princess Peachie, and I'd always loved girly, feminine things, like my Barbie princess dressup gowns, so when I discovered it for the first time my heart was racing! I remember thinking "Wow, I can wear princess dresses as an adult, too!?"

4. After knowing Lolita fashion, have you had any time-gap or resistance till you actually started to be Lolita?
Not at all, I had just recently gotten my first job so all of my teeny tiny paychecks went to buying lolita. >>"

5. Please define your Lolita style as much as possible. (eg. gothic Lolita, sweet Lolita, white Lolita…. Etc).
Sweet lolita! I sometimes dabble in other styles but it always comes back to sweet.

6. About how many Lolita friends do you have?
Oh, god. So many now that I moved to the Midwest. At least 100+. I have a core group of best friends of course but yeah. :E

7. What is the best thing about doing Lolita?
Getting to dress up so nicely every day; I always feel like I look my best when I wear lolita, so I feel comfortable and confident. It really boosts my self esteem and makes me feel like a Noble LadyTM lol. It also makes me feel a bit closer to my ancestors in a way, because it's a really great midpoint between what humans wore 200-300 years ago and what we wear now.

8. Conversely, what's the worst thing?
Ugh, the attention. In the US people automatically assume that if you dress differently they're entitled to harass or question you, or they think you're doing it for attention. Like dude I'm going grocery shopping plz leave me tf alone. It's so stupid and annoying.

9. Which Lolita Brands do you like?
Angelic Pretty, Metamorphose Temps de Fille, and old Bodyline (not Mr Yan old Bodyline, but Yoshiko old Bodyline. Her designs were so cute. ;A;)

10. What was the first Lolita item that you’ve owned?
OFFICIALLY lolita, the Bodyline Squirrel Party OP in lavender, but prior to that I'd already started hoarding any offbrand things I could find that were remotely loliable, such as vintage dresses, squaredancing dresses, and grandma blouses from Goodwill. Sidenote: squaredancing dresses are not at all loliable or lolita, don't do it kids. Just don't.

11. What is the “must have!” Lolita item?
A petticoat. It's not lolita without one.

12. Do you wear drawers?
Absolutely! I have an entire drawer dedicated to all of my bloomers; my favorites are my Metamorphose ones bc they're the most comfortable, but I also have some from Bodyline, IW, Taobao, and one pair that I made myself. Before that though, I just used to use lacy shorts and things, really anything to protect my underwear from the public lol. It's a necessity.

13. Do you have any favourite Japanese music?
I really love Daoko and Reol, but I've been getting super into Psycho le Cemu lately and really hope to see them live one day!!! ;A;

14. Where do you particularly visit as Lolita?
I LOVE visiting and trying out new cafes in lolita--imo, it's a great way to really test what kind of place it is by going in dressed super weird. So far I've not come across any cafes that treat me poorly or different for wearing lolita, and most are nice about it--but my favorites are the ones that say absolutely nothing at all, are polite and treat me like a normal person. Don't get me wrong, compliments are nice! But I love just going in, ordering my coffee and snack, and not having to deal with the awkward small talk. Just give me my food and let me sit in the corner like the weirdo I am LMAO.

15. About how many times per week do you dress as Lolita?
Any time I leave the house for more than five minutes, so usually 5-6 days a week. If I'm just going to the Dollar Tree across the street to get one thing and then come back home to get back in PJs, I'll wear normie clothes lol.

16. Please tell us about one embarrassing episode from the time when you were just beginning Lolita.
Lol so I wore my first full official coord to work, which was at a local costume rental/supply store. I had on my Bodyline Squirrel Party OP in lavender, some white lace-topped OTKs with pink polka dots, a plush Hello Kitty backpack, some pastel blue tights, pastel pink platforms, and a split wig--it was a mint and lavender split bob with the cotton candy puffs clipped on either side. A little girl and her mom popped in to look around for fun and when the little girl saw me she hid behind her mom and started crying hysterically, and her mom looks at me and laughs and goes "Oh don't worry, she's just afraid of clowns!" o-|--<

17. What's hairstyle and color that you think Lolita would suite the most?
Hime bangs with any natural hair color; the hime cut is a very flattering cut on most face shapes, I've had mine for many years now!

18. Have you ever thought of stopping Lolita? The reason?
Yes, because my girlfriend at the time was an abusive asshole and she treated me differently any time I wore it. She wouldn't look at me directly, she would avoid touching me or showing any physical affection, and would walk a few feet away from me any time we were out in public. But when I wore gothic lolita she was fine, so I sold a lot of my sweet things and thought maybe it was time for me to wear something more "mature" and switch to gothic. Newsflash, don't ever change yourself for another person, I regretted selling most of those pieces and obviously went back to sweet a year or two after I dumped her.

19. Please tell us your heart's bible as a Lolita. (anything like a book, magazine, CD, idol...)
Hmm, I think it would have to be a special edition GLB that has all the patterns from previous issues, plus new patterns, tutorials, and is basically centered entirely around lolita lifestyle. It's from the early 2000s and because of how stylized the characters are on the cover I haven't been able to properly translate it to find out its exact name yet. But I reference it constantly!

20. Do you own a doll? Tell us your feelings about her intensely!
Haha, I think this question is on lolita-specific dolls, like Pullips, the Jenny dolls, or the BJD collabs. I do have quite a few BJDs, and I have one Volks Kun who wears my BtssB x Volks Charlotte set! Her name is Eir (pronounced Ey-er) and she's a dryad if I remember correctly? I did her faceup myself. She has another Volks set that's gothic lolita, but I need to get that girl some more clothes. ._."

21. What kind of make-up do you wear when you wear Lolita clothes?
It entirely depends on what I'm doing, but lately I've been really into old sweet lolita styles from 2004-2010 so I like going with minimal, natural makeup, like a light eyeliner, some pink and brown shadow around the eye, a bit of blush, and a cute lip gloss, no falsies. But to be perfectly honest, for my daily lolita, especially during the pandemic, I wear no makeup at all and just focus on good skincare!

22. Have you ever secretly changed clothes in a train station bathroom on Lolita day-out?
Train station bathroom no but other bathrooms yes lol!

23. Are you composed when doing Lolita all by yourself?
Absolutely, you have to be if you want to be a daily lolita or a lifestyler. Since I started out as a lonelita anyways, it's something I've always been used to.

24. How much do you spend in your Lolita clothes& accessary monthly?
I hunt for deals whenever possible, and I buy quite a lot (which I'm trying to stop;;;) so I would estimate between $150-400 a month?

25. What is the most expensive Lolita thing you've bought so far? How much was it?
My Aya Army Set from Angelic Pretty's collab with Aya from Psycho le Cemu; after taxes and fees it came to $518. But I didn't buy it--my boyfriend did, as my combo birthday and Chrimmis present for 2021. ;__;

26. So far about how much has the expense been for Lolita goods?
Oh god, I'm not going to total it right now, but I imagine easily around the $9,000-$15,000 range;;;; I mean, over the course of 10 years? Come on. >_<"""

27. Lolita outfit really costs money. How do you raise money to cover the cost of Lolita?
Jobs, lol. Ever since I discovered it in high school to now.

28. Have you ever bought from an online store? If so, please tell us its good and bad points and some advice for the future. If not, please tell us why not.
I have almost only ever bought from online stores; the only exception is buying from friends at swap meets. Sometimes buying online gifts you with surprises; stains you didn't know about, buttons that are falling off or rips that were worse than you thought from the pictures. But it also means you can shop from the comfort of your own home, and take more time to decide on your purchase, like if you need to look at your wardrobe to see what this piece would work with, or look up how other people wear it to get ideas of how you would like to coord it yourself.

29. Even if you sort of want to keep it a secret, please clandestinely tell us about a private manufacturer that is the best.
I mean I don't think it's really secret, but Antaina still makes damn good shoes. , OH, AND ANGELIC IMPRINT! THEY'RE STILL AROUND! So is Chocochip Cookie, Pina Sweets Collection, Anna House, And Romeo, Fairy Wish, and Swimmer has also been recently resurrected! Nile Perch also has fantastic quality and almost everything they make works with sweet lolita.

30. Is there a brand and/or an item that you think, "I could never get it! But I unreasonably want it!"?
Angelic Pretty's Melty Chocolapin, I reeeeally want the fullset but yikes those prices, $1,000 for the dress alone? Maybe someday, but not right now lol.

31. What do you think about people who only do Lolita at music-lives or cosplay?
Personally I don't really understand it; lolita fashion is just clothes, it's a fashion style, like boho or punk or any other fashion style out there. Wearing it only at places like conventions just makes it seem like a costume which I find a little insulting. Perhaps to some people it's like your one really fancy dress that you wear to special occasions, like family dinners or weddings? That's the only thing I can equate it to but I still don't really get it.

32. From what age to what age is it acceptable to do Lolita? Do you think that there's a state in which someone must graduate from Lolita? (you can answer as ‘never graduate’)
I think you can wear lolita at any age, but you may have to change up a few things about your style--for example, when I'm in my 40s or 50s I will likely have to do my makeup differently than I did in my 20s so I can still look cute and elegant but without seeming garish, if that makes sense? But yeah go for it--if you're 80 and you wanna wear lolita, do it fam.

33. Is there a Lolita fashion or behavior that you think "I don't want Lolitas to do this!" about?
There are a few unsavory persons who are into DDLG or LOLITA lolita (like Nabokov Lolita) who also wear lolita fashion, and I don't consider those people lolitas. I consider them to be disrespectful fetishists who are harassing the community. You can be into one or the other but you can't be into both, and you sure as shit shouldn't be shoving yourself into lolita safespaces to try and talk about and defend your kinks when there are unconsenting folks and minors about. Piss right the fuck off with that.

34. Is there something you think "Lolita has to be this way!" about?
Mmm, not really. Lolita fashion is just clothes, people shouldn't change their personality to fit the clothes. The only exception is when you're in a specific setting; if you're dining in an expensive restaurant, please behave appropriately, don't be loud, obnoxious or obscene. There is a time and place for everything. And learning proper table manners and etiquette to use in those types of scenarios wouldn't hurt either, I know I definitely need to get better about that myself.

35. While doing Lolita, has something changed from earlier than you did Lolita?
Oh, so many things have changed! Like Question 34, that would be considered a very dated question today; back in the early 2000s, it was a bit of a common sentiment that you had to act "properly" while wearing lolita, and in the 2010s the high-pitched voice thing was definitely a trend. Nowadays, not at all. And similarly, in the early 2000s you wore your natural hair, then in the 2010s you wore wigs, and now we're getting back into natural hairstyles again.

36. Do you go to school/work as Lolita?
Yes!

37. Do you wear Lolita clothes as casual wear?
Yes!

38. Do you have a boyfriend (or husband)? Do you understand each other? (I think she meant “Does he understand you (as lolita)?”)
I currently have a boyfriend, and yes he does understand me as a lolita. He often equates it to his own hobbies, like his electric skateboards, and also understands why I have so much of it because I use lolita as my daily clothes. For example, the average person can have anywhere from 50-300 tshirts, and I only barely passed 100 dresses after 10 years in the fashion, and he understands that and never condemns me for it.

39. What do the people around you think of your doing Lolita? Do they accept it?
My mother thinks it's fun and has always supported me in my endeavors, she's even bought me lolita for my birthday and Chrimmis. My dad doesn't seem to mind it much anymore, but he didn't like it when I was younger. I think some of my family think it's nice but others think it's weird. Yknow. The usual.

40. What kind of Lolita is who has impressed you the most up until now?
If I had to name some specific lolitas, Princess Peachie would be high at the top of the list, along with AlyssiumBaby, Faunkegin, swdpunk, and maybe some more I'll think of and add to this list later?

41. Have you ever made your own Lolita clothing or/and accessories? If so, what was the best item that you’ve made?
Yes, I do quite frequently! Currently I've only made accessories though, I have the patterns for clothes but not the time or enough materials to make anything yet. Fabric shopping during a pandemic isn't really... A thing. For me anyways. I've made myself purses, headdresses, headbows, aprons, wristcuffs, all kinds of things. I think my best though was a 100% handsewn heart apron with a dettachable skirt I made for one of my best friends, I think for her birthday? It's really cute.

42. If you have an ideal Lolita outfit or coordination, please tell us.
The Metamorphose Temps de Fille x Barbie Barbie Ribbon JSK fullset. Slap any black or pastel pink blouse with it and some socks and you're good to go. It's such a strong set!

43. Is there a motif that you think “this is a simple of Lolita”?
Custom lace. I don't think you'll find custom lace with little characters woven into it anywhere else but lolita fashion lol.

44. Would you want to dress your children as Lolita?
I don't want kids, but I do have cats, and I do like dressing them up with cute dresses from time to time, so I suppose yes, I do!

45. What's your image of the ideal Lolita?
A lifestyler who also kinda lives that cottagecore life; by herself in a cute cottage, growing her own fruits and vegetables, harvesting her own tea leaves, embroidering and sewing her own clothes, going to meetups on the weekend in the city with her friends to cute places for tea. She is fascinated with old recipes from the 1800s, and bakes beautiful pastries full of flowers like lavender and rose. Maybe she also does floral arrangements, and of course her whole house is decorated like a cute little grandma house, with lots of lace, florals and doilies. And she has a spot by the window she can sit in with lots of plush pillows to read books, old GLBs, and fashion magazines. (Basically I'm describing my ideal lifestyle here lol.)
